Sprinkler winterization helps reduce freeze damage by removing trapped water before Colorado temperatures fall below freezing. Expert Sprinkler Blowouts to Winterize Your Irrigation System
Shut off the irrigation supply and follow the system- and manufacturer-specific drain procedure. When compressed air is appropriate, connect an adequately sized compressor at the designated blowout connection downstream of the backflow assembly, regulate pressure within component limits, and clear each zone without routing compressed air through the backflow assembly. Drain and protect the backflow assembly separately.
The exact sequence depends on whether the system uses manual or automatic drains and how its backflow assembly, valves, lines, and pop-up spray heads are configured. Trapped water can expand during a freeze and crack lines, fittings, valves, or backflow components.
When to Winterize Sprinkler Line in Colorado
Schedule winterization before freezing conditions can damage exposed or water-filled components; do not wait for a hard freeze. Timing varies with the forecast, elevation, system layout, and water-provider guidance.
A system-specific process includes:
- Shutting off the main sprinkler water supply
- Opening all drain valves to begin removing water

When should I schedule a blowout?

Can I just drain the system myself?
Manual and automatic drains may not remove water from every low point, zone, or backflow component. The system layout and manufacturer guidance determine whether compressed-air winterization is appropriate and how it should be performed.
What if a freeze already hit my system?
A freeze does not prove that damage occurred. The system can still be evaluated and winterized, then inspected again during spring startup for cracked lines, failed valves, damaged spray heads or nozzles, and backflow problems.
